Ahead of April CPI Report, Unrig Our Economy Calls for Action to End Corporate Price Gouging
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In advance of the release of April’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) report on Wednesday morning — which is expected to show that despite a small decrease in the rate of inflation, prices for everyday goods and services are continuing to climb precipitously — President Biden gave a speech to talk about how his administration will bring down costs for consumers and call out corporate greed.
In response, Sarah Baron, the campaign director for Unrig Our Economy, issued the following statement:
“The persistent high inflation rate we expect to see confirmed in April’s CPI report is a stark illustration of the fact that workers and corporations are faring very differently in our economy. As working people see prices for essential goods climb higher and higher, corporations are reporting record-breaking profits and giving massive payouts to wealthy shareholders — further proof that the economy has been rigged against everyday people.
President Biden is correct to address this issue head on. The White House and Congress should not be afraid to call out corporations for exploiting consumers — and should use every tool in their toolbox to prevent corporations from causing further harm.”

Maura Quint, Campaign Director of Americans for Tax Fairness said:
“The vast majority of us are still struggling to find stability during a multi-year pandemic, and the continuation of rising costs expected to be indicated by April’s CPI report is yet another obstacle we face. Meanwhile, large corporations and the rich are exploiting the pandemic to raise their prices while raking in record profits. This is blatant profiteering, and they must be held accountable.”
Alex Harman Director of Government Affairs, Antimonopoly and Competition Policy at Economic Security Project Action said:
“For working people, inflation means tightened budgets and times of hardship. For corporations, it represents yet another excuse to hike up prices and increase profit margins. It’s well past time for us to start prioritizing policies that work for all Americans, and hold corporations and the wealthy accountable.”
