ICYMI: Trump Outlines Pro-Billionaire Agenda in Joint Address to Congress as New Tariffs and Program Cuts Threaten Higher Prices for Americans

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last night, in a joint address to Congress, President Trump lied to the American people and doubled down on Republicans’ pro-billionaire agenda, downplaying the devastating impacts their plan would have on working people. This came the same day that he imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico that will raise prices and wreak havoc on the American economy in order to fund massive tax breaks for the wealthy. President Trump and congressional Republicans’ agenda threatens to further increase costs on everyday goods, gut funding for much-needed programs like Medicaid and SNAP, and jeopardize access to Social Security payments that millions of seniors rely on.

Unrig Our Economy and Families Over Billionaires launched a new ad ahead of the joint address, which ran on Fox and Friends earlier that morning. The ad features Leb, a veteran and Trump voter from Woodbridge, Virginia who is urging the President to put the interests of working families first instead of giving more tax breaks to billionaires and large corporations. His voice is representative of the overwhelming majority of Americans (82%) who oppose cuts to Medicaid, including 71% of Trump voters. Still, many Republicans in Congress are refusing to listen to their own constituents and supporting these backwards policies that prioritize billionaires over working people.

“Trump and Republicans started a trade war with our allies in Canada and Mexico, but the real economic warfare is being waged on working- and middle-class families who will face even higher prices so that Republicans can give billionaires another tax break,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “Trump and Congressional Republicans’ pro-billionaire agenda is designed to leach money away from working families and transfer it to the top 1%. Instead of enabling billionaires, putting programs like Medicaid and Social Security at risk, raising prices on Americans, and dodging their own constituents, we need Republicans in Congress to stand up for working people and oppose another massive payday for the ultra-wealthy paid for by everyday Americans. ”
