Shocker….Americans Disapprove of Trump and Congressional Republicans’ Government Shutdown and Plans To Raise Premiums on Millions of People

Washington D.C — Congressional Republicans may have thought it was a genius plan to shut down the government rather than extend popular health care tax credits that help millions of Americans afford health care…but a majority of Americans clearly disagree. One week into the government shutdown, Americans are making it clear that they want health care to be more affordable, and they oppose congressional Republicans’ obstinance in keeping the government shut down instead of helping to lower health care costs, according to a slew of new polls.

These latest polls show that:

  • 78% of Americans, including 59% of Republicans, want Congress to extend the ACA premium tax credits.
  • Nearly half of Americans (by a nearly 25-point margin) want to extend the tax credits and say Democrats should not compromise on those demands.
  • 47% of Americans, including 50% of independents, said they blame Republicans in Congress and Trump for the government shutdown.

So, congressional Republicans, still think it’s worth holding the government hostage to make health care less affordable?

“When it comes to giving billionaires massive tax breaks, Republicans in Congress will do whatever it takes as fast as they can, but when millions of Americans need Congress to keep their health care affordable, they would rather shut down the government,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Shocker – Americans don’t want to pay higher premiums, and poll after poll shows that. It’s time for Republicans in Congress to read a poll, prioritize lowering health care costs for their constituents, and end this government shutdown.”
