Washington, DC – As congressional Republicans prepare for President Trump’s State of the Union address tonight, working families are living the real state of the Union under a Republican-controlled Congress: soaring costs, historic cuts to health care, and food being taken off of their table.
For the past year, Republicans in Congress have repeatedly voted against the people they represent, raising their constituents’ costs in order to further enrich billionaires. Last year’s Republican Tax Law made the largest cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in history, ripping health care and food from millions of working Americans to provide the ultra-wealthy with massive tax breaks. Meanwhile, congressional Republicans have spent the past year supporting Trump’s cost-raising tariffs, letting health care tax credits expire, and driving up the price of groceries and everyday goods for Americans across the country.
The State of the Union thanks to Republicans in Congress:
- 15 million Americans are projected to lose health insurance because of Republicans’ devastating cuts to Medicaid and decision to let ACA tax credits expire.
- Two-thirds of Americans now worry about being able to afford health care for themselves and their families.
- 4 million people are projected to see cuts to food assistance they rely on because of historic cuts to SNAP benefits.
- In 2025, American households lost an average of $1,000, and could lose even more this year, as a direct result of Republican-backed tariffs.
“Americans are struggling to make ends meet because Republicans in Congress have repeatedly chosen to raise their costs while ripping away the health care and food assistance they rely on,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Congressional Republicans’ agenda has become clear: take money out of the pockets of working Americans to put even more into the pockets of billionaires and corporations.”
