ICYMI: Working Americans Are Paying More So Billionaires Can Pay Less, Thanks To Republicans in Congress

Washington, DC – A new analysis by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) confirms what families are already feeling: The Republican agenda is driving up costs for families in order to deliver more tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy. Thanks to policies enacted by Republicans in Congress and the Trump administration, working people are paying higher taxes in 2026, while the richest Americans are paying less.

According to ITEP’s analysis, these tax hikes are driven by:

  • Last year’s Republican Tax Law, which made devastating cuts to Medicaid and SNAP while delivering $1 trillion in tax breaks to the top one percent over the next decade.
  • Congressional Republicans’ decision to let health care tax credits expire, raising costs for millions and putting an estimated four million people at risk of losing coverage altogether.
  • Republican-backed tariffs, which are raising costs and amount to the biggest tax hike on Americans in over four decades.

“While Americans struggle to keep up with rising costs, Republicans in Congress continue to vote for policies that leave working families paying even more so that billionaires can pay less,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “The evidence is crystal clear – the Republican agenda is harming Americans nationwide. If congressional Republicans really cared about affordability like they claim to, they would stop voting to raise their constituents’ costs.”
