Congressman Lawler Calls SNAP a “Lifeline” for Families in His District, After Voting for The Largest SNAP Cuts in History

Washington, DC – After voting for the largest cuts to SNAP in history last year, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) said this week that SNAP is a “lifeline for thousands of families” across his district and that protecting SNAP benefits “means protecting working families, seniors, and small businesses who rely on them every day.” Yet, he still voted to cut this lifeline to fund tax breaks for billionaires.

Congressman Lawler’s alleged concern for protecting these benefits did not stop him from voting for massive cuts to SNAP that put benefits at risk for an estimated four million Americans, including over 300,000 New Yorkers. Local officials and advocates in his district have warned that these cuts will devastate the county government’s budget and worsen food insecurity in the area.

“SNAP is indeed a lifeline for families in Congressman Lawler’s district, as well as millions nationwide. That is precisely why his vote for the largest SNAP cuts in history is so devastating for the New Yorkers and Americans who are now losing their food assistance,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “If Congressman Lawler really cared about protecting SNAP benefits for families, why did he vote to take them away from millions of Americans?”
