House Republicans Just Voted to Put Your Social Security and Medicare At Risk to Protect Tax Breaks for Billionaires

Washington, DC – Congressional Republicans just voted for a constitutional amendment that would have put Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other programs that millions rely on to make ends meet on the chopping block – all while protecting tax breaks for billionaires. The measure failed to pass in the House, but nearly every House Republican voted in support of it.  Instead of taxing billionaires, Republicans’ legislation protects tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and threatens deep cuts to programs that provide support to working Americans.

This is not the first time that congressional Republicans have attacked programs that their constituents rely on. Last year’s Republican Tax Law enacted the largest cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in history to fund more tax breaks for billionaires and giant corporations. This vote is just another example of Republicans trying to take critical assistance away from working Americans in order to protect tax breaks for the richest of the rich.

“Republicans have no problem voting for tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy or a billion-dollar-a-day war. But when it comes to the programs that actually help the people they represent, they can never seem to make the math work…” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “With their vote today, Republicans have once again made their agenda clear: billionaires first, working Americans last.”
