Washington, DC — Republicans in Congress are – once again – fueling higher costs, as their unnecessary war in Iran continues to drive up prices at the pump and squeeze working families. A new report by the Joint Economic Committee Minority (JEC) shows Americans now have to spend 35 percent more on gas than they did a month ago. This spike is a direct result of the war in Iran which has sent gas prices soaring to more than $4 a gallon – and that nearly every congressional Republican voted for.
According to the JEC report:
- American households have paid $8.4 billion more on gas alone since the start of the war
- An F-150 now costs $145 to fill up just one tank, an increase of $37
- An SUV now costs $58 to fill up a tank, an increase of $15
- A sedan now costs $52 to fill up a tank, an increase of $13
Even before the war in Iran, Republicans’ agenda has already raised costs and squeezed families across the board. For the past year, Republican-backed tariffs have raised prices on groceries and everyday goods, costing the average family more than $1,700 in just one year. Meanwhile, their attacks on Americans’ health care have sent premiums skyrocketing and put over 15 million Americans at risk of losing health insurance. Now, they want to cut health care even more to bankroll their costly and unnecessary war.
“Families are paying more at the pump because Republicans in Congress would rather spend billions of dollars on a war that raises costs than find ways to actually make life more affordable,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “From the grocery store to the doctor’s office to the gas pump, congressional Republicans are financially crushing working Americans at every turn.”
