Bresnahan also stands to save nearly $10,000 annually from pass-through tax break he voted to extend
WASHINGTON – This Tax Day, Americans For Tax Fairness is releasing new research underscoring just how much Congressman Rob Bresnahan (PA-08) stands to benefit from his vote for the Republican Tax Law. Congressman Bresnahan’s vote could save his own family up to $6 million through expanded estate tax exemptions, while also delivering him nearly $10,000 a year in additional tax savings. All while working families are paying more for gas, food, utilities, and everyday goods.
According to this new analysis, Bresnahan, whose estimated net worth exceeds $36 million, benefited from key provisions in last year’s Republican Tax Law that overwhelmingly favored the ultra-wealthy. The report highlights a provision that roughly doubled the amount of inherited wealth shielded from the estate tax, a change that could save Bresnahan’s family up to $6 million if the tax applied in 2026. Another provision permanently extended a special tax break for owners of pass-through businesses, which could save Bresnahan himself almost $10,000 each year based on income disclosed in his congressional financial filings.
Congressman Bresnahan and his Republican colleagues are slated to vote today on a resolution doubling down on their support for the tax law. While working Pennsylvanians struggle to keep up this tax day, Congressman Bresnahan will be busy congratulating himself for raising their costs to bankroll tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy like himself.
“Congressman Rob Bresnahan voted for a tax law that puts money in his own pocket at a time when northeastern Pennsylvanians are being stretched thin by the rising costs of gas, food, and everyday purchases. Instead of looking for ways to bring down costs for his constituents, Congressman Bresnahan will be spending the day doubling down on his decision to put tax breaks for himself and his billionaire buddies over working families,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “This Tax Day, Bresnahan’s constituents deserve to know that while he is voting to take away their health care and raise their costs, his own family could walk away with millions.”
“Families all over Northeastern Pennsylvania are struggling to get by while Congressman Rob Bresnahan keeps getting richer,” said Action Together NEPA Executive Director Alisha Hoffman-Mirilovich. “We hear from constituents every day who are making impossible choices — whether they can afford medication or groceries, rent or electricity, gas or childcare. Bresnahan’s vote on the tax law that could benefit his own family is a betrayal of his constituents and proves that he doesn’t understand the needs of the people he’s supposed to represent.”
“We already knew that Rep. Bresnahan prioritized profit over Pennsylvanians with his vote for the Republican Tax Law. He sold six figures of stock in Medicaid providers before breaking his promise to constituents and gutting the program by over $900 billion,” said Rachele Fortier, executive director of Affordable Pennsylvania. “It’s bad enough that Congressman Bresnahan betrayed his constituents by voting for a bill that will rip healthcare and food assistance from tens of thousands of them. It’s even worse that while his constituents will struggle to put food on the table and go to the doctor, he will be raking it in via stock sales and tax breaks. Rep. Bresnahan must reverse his cuts to these programs and fight for lower costs for the entire NEPA community, not just himself.”
Bresnahan’s vote for the Republican Tax Law has already become a major focus in the district. Unrig Our Economy and Affordable PA have invested significantly in television, digital, and radio advertising in PA-08 and plan to continue making Bresnahan’s votes on tax giveaways for the wealthy and health care cuts a central issue in the months ahead. The Bresnahan Soaring Costs campaign has held protests and events holding Congressman Bresnahan accountable for his putting billionaires over working families.
