Washington D.C — Since the Iran War began earlier this year, the costs to Americans have been astronomical.
The war has cost taxpayers nearly $40 billion since it began according to a recent report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). It is also spiking everyday costs – especially the price of diesel, which has hit record highs in recent weeks. These higher prices have further squeezed Americans financially. A recent report from the Joint Economic Committee – Minority (JEC) shows that working families have lost $4,200 on average since early 2025 and separate reporting indicates that gas prices are climbing once again with no sign of it slowing down.
The war has also exacted a devastating human toll affecting hundreds of families. 18 U.S. service members have died and around 750 have been wounded as a result of the war. Many Republicans in Congress have repeatedly voted to support the war. For instance, Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01), previously voted to let the war continue five separate times in March, April, May, June, and July of this year. Two of the service members who were killed in the war were from Iowa.
“Americans continue to pay a steep price for the war in Iran. Not only has it cost working families at the pump and at the grocery store, it has cost U.S. troops their lives and left hundreds more injured,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Republican members of Congress, such as Congresswoman Miller-Meeks, repeatedly voted to continue this costly war.”
