Washington, D.C. — House Republicans just passed the largest cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in history to give the ultra-rich another massive tax break. What does that mean in practice? It means that – in a party-line vote – House Republicans voted to:
- Take health insurance away from nearly 15 million people, including kids, veterans, and seniors
- Take away food from millions of families nationwide
- Lower income for those that need it the most, while boosting it even more for the super-rich
Many House Republicans attempted to deceive the public ahead of this vote and claimed that they would never vote to cut programs like Medicaid and SNAP. But they can no longer run and hide from their constituents. They will now have to own the fact that they would be responsible for every rural hospital closure, every family that can’t afford that life-saving doctor visit, and every child forced to go to school hungry because of this bill.
“This bill is a clear statement of what House Republicans value. It’s a bleak vision for America that says ‘the wealthy deserve more and the rest of us deserve less,’” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “What House Republicans cannot seem to understand is that programs like Medicaid and SNAP are not funds they should raid for their rich donors whenever they feel like it. They are essential lifelines that keep the American dream alive for tens of millions of people. The Senate needs to stop this bill in its tracks and protect Medicaid and SNAP for millions of Americans.”
