Washington, D.C. — A recent article from Bloomberg Government highlights Congressman Rob Bresnahan’s (PA-08) role in voting to slash Medicaid for millions of Americans just after selling stock in a Medicaid provider whose stock tanked as the bill advanced. The article cites recent ads from Unrig Our Economy, including the $1 million ad campaign focused on Congressman Bresnahan’s decision to vote for the Republican Tax Law, which guts life-saving programs such as Medicaid and SNAP. In the ad, Krysten, a Scranton, PA resident who relies on Medicaid and was told by Congressman Bresnahan that he would never cut Medicaid, calls him out for prioritizing tax breaks to billionaires over the needs of his constituents.
“Congressman Bresnahan knows how much the Republican Tax Law hurts Northeastern Pennsylvania,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “On top of that, before voting for the largest cuts in Medicaid history, he sold off stock in a Pennsylvania Medicaid provider whose stock tanked following his vote. Congressman Bresnahan vowed to fight for his constituents and their health care, but when push came to shove he did the exact opposite – he jeopardized the health care of thousands of his constituents while lining billionaires’ pockets and focusing on his own bottom line.”
Bloomberg Government: Trump’s Tax Bill Faces A Big Test in This Pennsylvania District
- [Bresnahan’s] district includes some 200,000 people enrolled in Medicaid, close to 30% of the district, according to the nonpartisan health research group KFF. The new law includes around $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid and could cost nearly 12 million people their health coverage nationwide, nonpartisan analysts project.
- “He knows how bad this bill’s going to be for his constituents, and when it came back to the House he voted for it anyway,” said Kobie Christian, a spokesperson for the liberal organization Unrig Our Economy.
- On May 15, a week before the bill initially passed the House by a single vote, public disclosures show Bresnahan sold between $1,000 and $15,000 of stock in Centene, a managed care organization that provides Medicaid coverage in more than two dozen states. The company’s stock fell as the measure advanced, including by roughly 40% after it cleared the Senate.
