Congressional Republican-Backed Tariffs Are Driving Up Prices of Summer BBQs, Brunches, and More to Fund Billionaire Tax Breaks

Washington D.C — Thanks to tariffs President Trump imposed and congressional Republicans have repeatedly backed, prices on everyday goods from orange juice to beef to essential home goods are skyrocketing and hurting working-class families. Republicans in Congress could roll back these cost-raising tariffs any day, but, instead, they’ve supported these tariffs and are using them to help fund tax breaks for billionaires. In other words, Republicans are taxing working-class people to shovel money into the hands of the richest of the rich.

The ramifications of these tariffs are wide-ranging and harmful to Americans everywhere. Beef prices have soared in the past few months, meaning summer BBQs are getting more and more expensive. Despite a previous promise not to raise prices, Amazon has been forced to increase prices on common essentials such as canned soup and cleaning items. According to Johanna Foods, which supplies 75% of the country’s non-concentrate orange juice, its prices could rise by approximately 20-25% if tariffs go into effect. However, unlike congressional Republicans, they are fighting back and suing to stop Trump from enacting these cost-raising tariffs.

“Instead of standing up for lower prices for working-class Americans, Republicans in Congress continue to double down on tariffs, unpopular tax breaks for billionaires, and dangerous cuts to Medicaid and SNAP,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Congress should make undoing these cost-raising tariffs their number one priority – not giving more handouts to millionaires and billionaires.”
