Washington D.C — Iowa Republicans just moved up the timeline for kicking tens of thousands of Iowans off their health care – making Unrig Our Economy’s ads highlighting Congressman Zach Nunn, Congresswoman Mariannette Miller Meeks, and Senator Joni Ernst’s votes for the law that are much more pressing. Despite the fact that some of the harshest Medicaid cuts included in the Republican Tax Law aren’t mandated to go into effect until 2027, Iowa’s Republican Governor, Kim Reynolds, just couldn’t wait. Republicans in Iowa are apparently so eager to leave thousands of Iowans without the health care they need that they are implementing some of these Medicaid cuts and putting parents of young children at risk of losing coverage an entire year earlier.
This comes as Republicans in Congress continue to try and whitewash their pro-billionaire tax law and paper over the fact that they voted to leave millions of Americans without health care. Both Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01) and Congressman Zach Nunn (IA-03) claimed that they wouldn’t vote to cut access to Medicaid coverage…and then almost immediately voted to slash it. Not only could Congresswoman Miller-Meeks not defend this move, she tried to avoid one of her constituents who asked about her views on Medicaid and then flippantly claimed that, “no one cut Medicaid.”
“Republicans can blab about how much they want to ‘preserve Medicaid’ all they want, but their actions tell a very different story,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Iowa Republicans’ move to fast track these Medicaid cuts reveals the truth – their tax law was never about ‘preserving Medicaid’ but all about giving handouts to their billionaire buddies by leaving millions without the health care they rely on.”
