President Trump and Republican lawmakers have made life unaffordable for Americans, raising costs on everything from groceries to furniture to health care. As Americans are seeing their costs go up, they’re also seeing a weak job market thanks to Republican policies. Due to the Republican-led government shutdown, the Bureau of Labor Statistics won’t be releasing its monthly jobs report – leaving Americans in the dark on the state of the economy. This People’s Jobs Report seeks to shed light on the pain working people are feeling due to Trump and congressional Republicans’ economic policies. From tariffs to health care cuts, Republican priorities have left millions of working families behind – and the worst is still to come.
The State Of Jobs In America Is Dismal
- Since Trump took office and the Republican House and Senate were sworn in in January, the U.S. economy has created fewer than 600,000 jobs, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
- ADP reported that U.S. companies shed 32,000 jobs last month.
- This summer has been catastrophic for job growth. In June, the economy lost 13,000 jobs while in July and August, barely more than 100,000 jobs were created. During the same period in 2024, over 200,000 jobs were created.
- In June, the economy lost 13,000 jobs, the first time that has happened since 2020 during the pandemic.
- The jobless rate rose to 4.3%, the highest rate since 2021. Last month, jobless claims reached the highest level since 2021.
- Among recent college graduates, the unemployment rate increased to 5.3% this year, making it one of the worst job markets for recent grads since 2015.
- Unemployment for Black workers has gone up to 7.5%, the highest level since October 2021. A recent report said that an unprecedented 300,000 Black women left their jobs and/or left the labor force over three months in 2025.
- In August, unemployment claims surged to nearly 2 million, the highest since 2021.
- In February, layoffs spiked to their highest level since July 2020, in the midst of the pandemic. Since Trump and congressional Republicans took power, many companies have instituted massive layoffs, including:
- Procter & Gamble: – 7,000 jobs
- Microsoft: -6,000 jobs
- Walmart: -1,500 jobs
- Crowdstrike: -500 jobs
- Trump’s tariffs have caused chaos for employers. In tariff-related industries, payrolls fell by 90,100 jobs, including 42,000 jobs in manufacturing. Wholesale trade jobs fell by more than 26,000 since January and mining and logging jobs fell by 12,000 during the same period.
- Small businesses have been hit especially hard by Trump’s tariffs: Since Republicans came into power, employment at the smallest businesses (those with fewer than 10 employees) has dropped by 26,700 jobs.
More Jobs Will Continue To Disappear
- The Republican Tax Law is expected to cut more than 1.2 million jobs due to its cuts to Medicaid and SNAP.
- The Republican Tax Law is expected to put more than 2 million jobs at risk due to its cuts to clean manufacturing tax credits. This includes:
- Nearly 300,000 direct manufacturing jobs,
- More than 1 million indirect jobs down the supply chain, and
- Nearly 643,000 jobs that were created by the economic stimulus.
- In the next year, 286,000 jobs are expected to go away due to Republicans’ refusal to expand crucial health care tax credits.
- Trump and OMB Director Russell Vought are threatening mass layoffs across the federal government. This is in addition to the 300,000 federal workers who are expected to leave the government through buyouts or firings by the end of the year.
