The People’s Price Index

President Trump and Republicans in Congress have made life unaffordable for Americans, raising costs on everything from health care to groceries. These cost increases are directly related to Trump’s tariffs, which Republicans in Congress have repeatedly signed off on, and the Republican Tax Law’s cuts to health care. Now, due to the Republican-led government shutdown, the Bureau of Labor Statistics is delaying its monthly inflation report – leaving Americans in the dark on how tariffs are impacting prices.

The People’s Price Index demonstrates how Republican policies are raising prices and are responsible for the extra pain millions of Americans are feeling everyday

Republicans’ Health Care Cuts Will Increase Costs For Everyone

The Republican Tax Law and congressional Republicans’ refusal to extend crucial health care tax credits will cause health care premiums and costs to skyrocket for millions of Americans.

  • Medicare premiums are also expected to increase under the Republican Tax Law. An older couple on Medicare could face an additional $8,340 in health care costs each year. The Republican Tax Law could cost 1.3 million Medicare recipients access to the Medicare Savings Program, which helps seniors afford prescription drugs. This will cause thousands of seniors to pay increased prices, while others may forgo expensive prescription drugs.

Trump and Congressional Republicans’ Tariffs Are Increasing Costs For Americans

President Trump’s off-the-cuff tariff agenda, which has been OK’d repeatedly by congressional Republicans, is wreaking havoc on families’ bank accounts. These tariffs are causing prices to go up on everyday goods, and working people are paying the price…literally.

Real People, Real Impacts

  • Molly from Scranton, PA: “Life is getting more expensive for all of us. I’ve seen people struggle to afford basic needs like food or rent.”
  • Nathan from Knoxville, TN: “Electricity costs for the average Tennessean have risen by over 10% in just the last year, and show no signs of leveling out.”
  • Heather from Tehachapi, CA: “Health care is too expensive, and Republicans in Washington don’t care. If you have been to the doctor lately, or heaven forbid, had to go to the emergency room, you know that even routine care is shockingly overpriced. Too many Americans are delaying or forgoing care for financial reasons.”
  • Roy from Bethlehem, PA: “Congressman Mackenzie is making things more difficult with these tariffs. All he’s doing is making the price of groceries go up through the roof and we’re already feeling the repercussions of it.”
  • Melinda, a small business owner from Seattle, WA: “I run my business with a small staff. If one of us is out for a prolonged period due to illness or injury, the business suffers, and service to the community suffers. Expensive healthcare means a sicker community, more expensive treatments needed when access to care is delayed, which in turn makes healthcare even more expensive.”
  • Nikki, a mother of two from Des Moines, IA: “I’ve already had to make cuts to my grocery lists and with more tariffs constantly being announced, I don’t know how families like mine are going to make ends meet.”
  • Laurel Vincenty from NC who picked up a second job in anticipation of her family’s premiums going up by nearly $2,000 next year: “It was frustrating receiving the letter, knowing that we may lose our subsidies, that we don’t know how we’ll be able to afford our health insurance.”
