As Republican Tariffs Drive Up Costs, New USDA Report Says Food Prices Will Continue Soaring in 2026

Washington, DC – A new report from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) shows food prices are expected to keep rising this year, as Republican policies continue to drive up costs for working Americans. According to USDA’s report, food costs are projected to climb another 3.1 percent in 2026, even higher than 2025 which saw food costs rise 2.5 percent.

Congressional Republicans have repeatedly voted to support President Trump’s cost-raising tariffs that are driving up the price of food and other essentials. Meanwhile, last year’s Republican Tax Law enacted the largest cuts to SNAP in history – putting an estimated four million Americans at risk of losing food assistance – to give even more tax breaks to billionaires and corporations. Unrig Our Economy’s site Don’t Inflate Our Plates has been tracking the rising costs of key food items, highlighting the growing affordability crisis created by Republicans in Congress.

“Families are already struggling to put food on the table and, instead of relief, they’re getting hit with even higher costs because congressional Republicans continue to prioritize billionaires over working Americans,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Thanks to Republican-backed tariffs and devastating SNAP cuts, working Americans are not only facing higher food prices but millions of people are also losing the assistance they rely on to put food on the table.”
