Washington D.C — As President Trump visits Wisconsin, farmers and rural communities across the country are reeling from the consequences of a Washington Republican agenda that’s making it harder to keep family farms alive.
Farmers are the backbone of this country. They feed our families, sustain rural communities, and do some of the hardest, most essential work in America. And President Trump and congressional Republicans are making it harder for them to make ends meet and keep their family farms alive – all while giving tax breaks to billionaires.
- Tariffs are raising the cost of equipment and fertilizer that farmers need to run their businesses.
- Tariffs are also cutting farmers off from major markets for soybeans, corn, pork, sorghum, and other key products.
- Health care cuts are making coverage more expensive for farmers and their families.
- SNAP cuts are reducing families’ ability to purchase products from farmers.
- And the Republican war in Iran is raising the cost of diesel and fertilizer that farmers were already paying too much for.
“Farmers were promised lower costs and a stronger economy. Instead, Trump and congressional Republicans are raising their costs, threatening their health care, and making it harder to access the markets they need to survive,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Family farmers are getting squeezed while the wealthy and Republicans keep giving more tax breaks to billionaires.”
