Congressional Republicans Lit Americans’ Health Care on Fire. They’re About To Vote On Whether or Not to Keep It Burning

Washington D.C — Republicans in Congress spent 2025 devising ways to make life less affordable for every American. On top of backing tariffs and other policy changes that drove up the cost of groceries and utilities, Congressional Republicans lit Americans’ health care on fire: making historic cuts to Medicaid and getting rid of the health care tax credits.

Now, thanks to efforts by Congressional Democrats, Republicans in Congress have a chance to stop that raging fire from causing even more damage by voting to bring back the health care tax credits that they let die last year. Over 22 million people relied on those health care tax credits, and if Republicans in Congress don’t vote to bring them back, monthly premiums could double on average, and around 4 million people would lose health care altogether.

“Congressional Republicans have voted for policies that will take Medicaid away from millions, close rural health centers nationwide, and make health care unaffordable for American families that need it most,” said Unrig Our Economy Spokesperson Kobie Christian. “Republicans in Congress lit the match. The only question is whether they’ll try to stop the fire before it wreaks havoc on the coverage of 22 million people who rely on these health care tax credits to afford basic coverage.”
