Congressman Don Bacon Votes to Gut Medicaid, Breaks Promise to Nebraskans

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 22, 2025

Washington, D.C. — Just two months ago, Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02) said, “I am committed to not cutting Medicaid.” He also claimed that his “red line” was no more than $500 billion in cuts to Medicaid. Well, unless Congressman Bacon was talking about another bill, the bill he just voted for would:

  • Cut Medicaid by nearly $700 billion – well beyond his so-called red line
  • Kick up to 57,000 Nebraskans, including kids, seniors, and veterans, off their coverage, and leave 15 million people uninsured nationwide
  • Funnel massive new tax breaks to billionaires and corporations

The betrayal doesn’t stop there. This bill also slashes SNAP by almost triple the amount that Congressman Bacon claimed he was comfortable with. Those cuts could leave as many as 11 million people without enough to eat, including thousands of working-class families in his own district.

“My family relied on SNAP and Medicaid to put food on the table and keep each other healthy,” said Cale Johnson of Omaha, NE. “I couldn’t imagine how much more difficult our lives would have been without these vital programs. Congressman Bacon and his staff looked people like me in the eye and swore that he wouldn’t touch our health care or SNAP. Yet, when it came time to vote, he sided with the billionaires over Nebraskans. It’s devastating and an embarrassment that my own member of Congress voted to prioritize the ultra-rich instead of me and my family with his vote today.”

“After his vote to give billionaires another massive tax break at the expense of hardworking Nebraskans, Congressman Bacon should never claim to be on the side of working people again,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “Nebraskans took Congressman Bacon at his word when he said he would not cut Medicaid, and he let them down yet again. Working- and middle-class Nebraskans can neither access health care nor feed their families with broken promises.”
