Congressman Kevin Hern Gives Away The Game: The Recent Federal Funding Cuts Are All About Giving Tax Breaks To The Wealthy And Corporations
Washington D.C. — Yesterday, Congressman Kevin Hern, a member of House Republican leadership, publicly acknowledged the open secret we all already knew: the real reason for the Trump administration’s federal funding cuts is to pay for the new Republican tax plan that will give tax breaks to the wealthy and corporations.
According to Politico: “It’s about time right? For you, me and the people receiving the grants,” Hern said. “If you’re going to cut taxes and send money back home, then you also need to stop the spigot in Washington, D.C. You can’t do both.”
Regardless of the current status of the White House’s disastrous funding plans, we know that Trump and House Republicans are going to keep attacking crucial support that communities rely on in order to pay for tax breaks for their rich buddies. In fact, House Republicans have been gathered together behind closed doors all week to plot which programs are on the chopping block to help fund these massive and costly tax breaks.
“I’d like to thank Kevin Hern for giving away the game – that the real reason Republicans seem so adamant about cutting impactful and popular programs that families depend on is to pay for even more massive tax breaks for billionaires and corporations,” said Kobie Christian, Unrig Our Economy Spokesperson. “This week, President Trump and Republicans in Congress demonstrated that they would happily cut things like Meals on Wheels, housing assistance, and food for mothers and young children in order to deliver for the rich.”
Extending the 2017 tax law’s tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans would cost $2.4 trillion over ten years, including a $114.2 billion price tag for tax breaks to the top 1% in one year alone. On top of that, they’re considering passing even more tax breaks for millionaires and big corporations. Instead of lining the pockets of the wealthiest Americans, Republicans should fund the important, popular programs – including Medicaid, SNAP, home heating assistance, school meal programs, Meals on Wheels, Head Start, nutrition support for mothers and young children, housing assistance, and much more – that people across the country depend on, instead of more handouts to the wealthy.
