Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01), who sits on the House Energy and Commerce Committee that oversees Medicaid funding, failed to sign on to a recent letter from some of her colleagues to House Republican leadership that urges them to protect Medicaid. Nearly 700,000 Iowans are on Medicaid, including 3 in 8 children. Congresswoman Miller-Meeks has voted twice to advance the Republican plan that will force massive cuts to Medicaid, and she couldn’t even do the bare minimum by signing this letter. It’s time for her to reverse course and use her powerful committee position to stop Medicaid cuts in their tracks instead of prioritizing tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy at the expense of her constituents.
“Congresswoman Miller-Meeks has had multiple opportunities to stand up for her constituents who rely on Medicaid for their health care. Instead, she’s voted for House Republicans’ budget resolution and won’t even give lip service to her constituents by signing this letter,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “When House Republicans mark up their plan in the Energy and Commerce Committee in the coming weeks, will Congresswoman Miller-Meeks protect working- and middle-class families by rejecting cuts to Medicaid or put billionaires first yet again? Iowans will be watching.”
