Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress Threaten To Hold Disaster Relief Hostage to Leverage Massive Tax Breaks for the Rich
Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, after a meeting to discuss strategy on moving a reconciliation bill that would include massive tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations, President Trump and Republicans in Congress flaunted their plans to leverage the devastating loss from wildfires in California to help pass these enormous tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations.
“I think we have a good situation now,” Trump said at a press conference. “It’s been in some ways made simpler by Los Angeles, because they’re going to need a lot of money — and generally speaking I think you’ll find a lot of Democrats are going to be asking for help. So I think that maybe makes it more one-sided,” Politico reported this morning.
This isn’t the first time Trump has proposed this: just last week, he suggested using federal aid to Los Angeles as a tactic to win Democratic votes for his reconciliation package.
“Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress aren’t wasting any time in showing that they’re hell-bent on giving more tax breaks to corporations and the wealthy no matter the cost to everyday people, even those who have been stricken by the tragedy of natural disasters like the wildfires in California,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “Threatening to attach conditions to disaster relief shows that President Trump and Republicans in Congress are willing to exploit families in need in order to line the pockets of the wealthiest Americans and corporations.”
