GOP Guts the Department of Education As Part of Plot to Fund Tax Breaks for Billionaires On the Backs of Working Families
Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Education announced that they would be firing half of its workforce, threatening to harm students and families nationwide who rely on public schools and affordable access to higher education. These firings are yet another dangerous cut implemented by the Trump administration as it continues its efforts to force working families to pay the price for its unpopular pro-billionaire agenda.
This action is the first step in President Trump and congressional Republicans’ effort to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education, which could result in teacher layoffs, larger classroom sizes, and fewer resources for students with disabilities nationwide. It is also one facet of their larger plot to dismantle vital programs that support working families and make life more affordable in order to give tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans. Working families are already feeling the effects of President Trump and Elon Musk’s DOGE cuts:
- Roughly 2,400 Department of Veterans Affairs staffers have been fired, with a goal of 80,000 terminations by the end of the year, jeopardizing veterans’ health care.
- $1 billion in funds for student lunches and food banks from the U.S. Department of Agriculture have been cut.
- 7,000 Social Security Administration personnel who help seniors access their benefits have been fired.
- Slashing Social Security’s phone service, which processes 40% of all claims, while also closing Social Security field offices.
- Massive cuts to the IRS, which will enable billionaire tax cheats and disrupt service for taxpayers in the middle of tax season.
- Stopping a $1 billion program that preserves affordable housing units that low-income Americans rely on.
“By gutting the U.S. Department of Education and threatening benefits for veterans and seniors, President Trump is showing his true priorities – cutting some of the most needed services in our country to help advance his pro-billionaire agenda,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “Rather than delivering on their promise to lower costs, Republicans are harming families and children by cutting essential services and resources to pay for outrageously expensive tax breaks for billionaires. President Trump and congressional Republicans must stop propping up their billionaire friends at the expense of parents, children, veterans, seniors, and working families across the country.”
