Washington, DC — Gas prices are soaring, and Americans have congressional Republicans to thank. After Republicans voted to support the war in Iran last week, oil prices have risen to over $100 a barrel, driving gas prices up an average of 17 percent nationwide. Gas prices are now estimated to reach as high as $4 a gallon. And it doesn’t just stop at gas. Food prices are also projected to spike because of the conflict’s impact on oil prices. That’s higher costs at the pump and the grocery store, putting even more strain on Americans already struggling to keep up with rising costs.
This is just the latest example of Republicans in Congress making life even more expensive for the people they represent. Over the past year, Republican-backed tariffs jacked up costs, and their historic cuts to Medicaid and SNAP have left millions of Americans struggling to afford health care and put food on the table. Now, rather than voting to undo these cost-raising policies, Republicans in Congress are hitting Americans with higher costs once again and causing pain at the pump nationwide.
“Congressional Republicans’ cost-raising tariffs and cuts to SNAP and Medicaid have already left working people across the country struggling to afford daily life, and now they have chosen bankrolling a new war over lowering their constituents’ costs,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Instead of continuing to innovate new ways to make everyday life more expensive for working families, Republicans in Congress should start focusing on actually addressing the affordability crisis they already created.”
