House Republicans Are Gearing Up to Gut Vital Programs to Give Billionaires Another Tax Break

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, House Republicans are planning to vote to advance their budget plan, which will gut vital programs like Medicaid and SNAP in order to fund a massive giveaway to giant corporations and billionaires. Even though most Americans oppose more tax breaks for the rich, Speaker Johnson and House Republicans are determined to do their billionaire backers a solid and inflict even higher costs on working families.

Unrig Our Economy has been leading the way and mobilizing working families across the country, launching an eight-figure campaign earlier this month to urge Republicans in Congress to oppose this pro-billionaire agenda. The campaign kicked off with TV ads highlighting Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) and Congressman Don Bacon’s (NE-02) support for more tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy that will be paid for by working-class people. Unrig Our Economy is also urging Americans nationwide to contact their representatives and tell them to oppose this backwards plan that threatens to upend the lives of millions of Americans who rely on programs like Medicaid and SNAP in order to put even more money in the pockets of the ultra-rich.

“With all of the issues facing our country, it is telling that congressional Republicans’ number one priority is giving billionaires tax breaks paid for by working families,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “Many Republicans claimed that they oppose cuts to Medicaid, yet this plan will require massive cuts to Medicaid – jeopardizing health care coverage for millions. Republicans in Congress have also railed against the rising cost of everyday goods, yet this bill will raise expenses on daily necessities like food, health care, and education. Will Republicans stand up for families by opposing this harmful agenda? Or will they vote to give even bigger tax breaks to the people who need it the least? Working people across the country will be watching.
