Washington, D.C. — Today, Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee voted to advance a bill that gives massive tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires, paid for by raising taxes on working people and leaving millions without health care. The Republican plan also takes away health care tax credits, which will lead to 4.2 million people being uninsured and higher premiums for millions more.
During the markup, which continued through the night, Republicans on the committee voted down multiple amendments aimed at putting working families first. Republicans voted no on amendments blocking millionaires and billionaires from getting more massive tax breaks, extending the health care tax credits to make sure millions of Americans can afford coverage, and stopping Trump’s devastating cost-raising tariffs.
“This is a reverse Robin Hood of the highest order,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “From cutting health care to ripping away food assistance to rubber stamping cost-raising tariffs, Republicans in Washington are making life more expensive for working- and middle-class Americans by handing over their tax dollars to the super-rich. Families need lower costs, not cuts to health care and billionaire tax breaks. Congress should be fighting to help working families, not the ultra-wealthy.”
