Washington, DC – Today, House Republicans narrowly passed a Farm Bill, which doubles down on Republicans’ cuts to SNAP and fails to lower food costs. It’s the latest example of Republicans in Congress putting the needs of working families last by continuing to sit on their hands as food costs skyrocket for millions.
This vote comes as gas prices have reached a new high of $4.30 per gallon, diesel prices have reached $5.50 per gallon, and food prices continue to skyrocket thanks to Republicans’ unnecessary war in Iran. This Farm Bill also does nothing to address President Trump and congressional Republicans’ tariffs, which have devastated farmers and raised costs on families. Ostensibly, the Farm Bill is meant to support farmers nationwide, yet they are being squeezed by rising fertilizer costs, sky high diesel costs, and shrinking markets thanks to Republican-backed tariffs and the war in Iran.
“My energy and gas bills are through the roof. And Republican cuts to SNAP are making it harder to feed my family,” said Scranton, Pennsylvania resident and SNAP recipient Krysten. “I am a home health care worker, and I rely on SNAP and Medicaid to help me get through the day-to-day. This bill is just another slap in the face from Republicans in Congress, including my Congressman, Rob Bresnahan, who supported this bill. It’s always the same story with these Republicans – wealthy people get tax breaks, working people get punched in the gut.”
“Farming has never been an easy way to make a living, but congressional Republicans continue to make it even harder,” said lifelong farmer and Humboldt, Nebraska resident Ben. “Fertilizer costs are through the roof. Diesel prices are skyrocketing. Between this anti-Farm Bill, tariffs, and SNAP cuts, I can’t think of a time when it was more expensive to be a farmer. Republicans in Congress need to stop raising prices, stop hurting rural and urban families, and let farmers get back to doing what we love – keeping our family farms and communities alive.”
“This Farm Bill is a classic piece of legislation by Republicans in Congress that puts working families last and does nothing to help their constituents who are struggling with rising prices,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “This was an opportunity to undo their drastic SNAP cuts and tariffs which are wreaking havoc on the economy and families’ ability to put food on the table. Instead, they stuck with their same old agenda. The American people deserve better.”
