Hundreds of Thousands of Arizonans Are Losing Food Assistance Because of Congressman Juan Ciscomani

Washington, DC Congressman Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06) said he’d protect SNAP – only to vote for the largest cuts to the program in history. Now, hundreds of thousands of Arizonans are losing their food assistance because of Congressman Ciscomani’s betrayal.

According to a new analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), SNAP participation in Arizona has dropped by over 420,000 people, including over 180,000 children, since the passing of last year’s Republican Tax Law. In just seven months, Arizona saw a 47 percent decrease in SNAP recipients – the largest state-wide percentage in the nation. That number is only expected to increase as Republicans’ cuts are fully implemented. Despite promising to protect SNAP, Congressman Ciscomani voted last year for the largest cuts to SNAP in history to fund tax breaks for billionaires, and this data shows Arizona families are paying the price.

“Hundreds of thousands of Arizonans now have to worry about how they are going to put food on the table because Congressman Ciscomani betrayed them. He said he’d protect SNAP, but when it came time to vote he decided that tax breaks for billionaires were more important,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Congressman Ciscomani can make empty promises all he wants, but it won’t change the fact that he voted for these cuts and is responsible for every meal missed because of them. It’s time for Congressman Ciscomani to prioritize working families, not billionaires and big corporations.”
