Washington, D.C. — During an Iowa town hall over the weekend, Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) didn’t flinch when one of her constituents raised concerns that Republicans’ effort to take away millions of people’s health care would kill people. She simply smirked, shrugged, and told them: “Well, we all are going to die.”
Instead of realizing that losing health care coverage is a matter of life or death for millions of Americans and apologizing for her insensitive comment, Senator Ernst posted a bizarre, sarcastic video from a literal graveyard, where she doubled down on her comments mocking her own constituents. Sen. Ernst, this is no laughing matter. If you vote for this bill, it would:
- Kick 10.3 million people off Medicaid
- Leave 15 million uninsured
- Lead to 15,400 unnecessary deaths
“Sen. Ernst’s flippant comments over the weekend reveal a grim reality: Republicans in Congress know that their tax bill will rip away lifesaving health care from their constituents, jeopardizing lives just to pad billionaires’ pockets…and they just don’t care,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “The Senator chose to mock Iowans from a graveyard rather than apologize to and stand up for the seniors, people with disabilities, mothers, and children who could lose their health care because of this bill. With the tax bill moving through the Senate, will Sen. Ernst and her Republican colleagues continue to mock and ignore the real concerns of their own constituents or will they finally stop this harmful pro-billionaire agenda? The choice is their’s.”
