ICYMI: CFPB Employees, Lawmakers, & Advocates Rally to Defend Consumer Watchdog Which Protects Americans from Predatory Corporations

Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, lawmakers, advocates, and employees rallied outside the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) office in Washington, D.C. to protest the Trump administration’s unlawful stop-work order for bureau officials. The CFPB, which is charged with protecting consumers from being swindled by giant corporations, has provided Americans over $20 billion in relief since it was founded. The agency has played a pivotal role in protecting hardworking Americans from illegal or dishonest practices by predatory institutions – from wiping medical debt from credit reports to taking on excessive credit card fees for American families. Yet, Republicans and MAGA extremists are attempting to dismantle this invaluable watchdog which protects everyday people while also working to pass more tax breaks for corporations and the ultra-rich and making working people foot the bill.

“Donald Trump ran his campaign on lowering costs for working families. Now, he and his co-president, Elon Musk, have tried to shut down the agency that has delivered $21 billion to hardworking families,” said Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Ma) who spoke at yesterday’s rally. “Donald Trump and Elon Musk have told the financial cops at the CFPB to stand down…no matter how big the scam, no matter how bold the trap, they have said just stand by and let the Wall Street boys take your money.”

“As Americans continue to feel the sting of high prices, Donald Trump and his cronies are trying to gut the CFPB, which protects everyday people from scams and abuse by corporations and has saved billions of dollars for working- and middle-class families nationwide,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “Whether it’s pushing for massive tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy, cutting federal funding for health care and food assistance, or dismantling this pro-consumer watchdog, Republicans have made their agenda clear.
