Washington D.C — In a recent radio town hall, Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01) claimed that she hasn’t heard from any farmers who have felt betrayed by tariffs in response to a caller literally telling her that the tariffs are hurting farmers.
The truth is undeniable: Iowa farmers are set to lose billions of dollars because of these tariffs. Yet Congresswoman Miller-Meeks continues to stand by them — voting repeatedly with President Donald Trump and Republican leadership to keep the tariffs in place, rather than ending them and lowering costs for millions of Americans. On top of that, she voted for the largest cuts to SNAP in history, dealing another blow to Iowa farmers who rely on strong local demand and working families’ ability to put food on the table.
“I’d be surprised if Congresswoman Miller-Meeks truly hasn’t heard from farmers on this betrayal,” said Mary Krier, an Iowa soybean farmer. “The soybean market was great, and good for all farmers – especially in Iowa. Miller-Meeks supported the tariffs that destroyed that market. Right now we’re under water and not even going to hit our break-even price, so we’ll be sitting on soybeans for however long it takes to get a decent price again.”
“If Congresswoman Miller-Meeks hasn’t heard from farmers, it’s because she isn’t listening,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Farmers in Iowa feel betrayed by Republicans in Congress who could end these tariffs at any time, yet time and time again refuse to do so. From voting for the largest cuts to SNAP and Medicaid in history, to supporting tariffs, to refusing to extend health care tax credits, Congresswoman Miller-Meeks has betrayed farmers and all of her constituents who are looking to sell their goods and afford basic necessities.”
