Washington D.C — When Republicans in Congress voted for their tax law last year, they voted to kick millions of Americans off their coverage so that the ultra-wealthy could rake in even more tax breaks. Now, Republicans in Nebraska are showing the country the consequences of this disastrous law.
Starting this week, the GOP-led state government is implementing portions of the Republican Tax Law, which could leave up to 30,000 Nebraskans without health care by 2028. To make matters worse, they are rushing through this process eight months before they are required to and without giving Medicaid enrollees proper notice, all but ensuring that thousands will lose access to basic health care.
“Republicans in Congress are responsible for putting the health care of tens of thousands of Nebraskans and millions of Americans in jeopardy,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “It is disgraceful that millions of people are being left in the dark over whether or not they will be able to see a doctor – all so billionaires and corporations can rake in more tax breaks. We need Republicans in Congress to listen to their constituents and roll back their cuts to health care now.”

Key Points:
- Roughly 70,000 Nebraskans are covered through Medicaid expansion, which voters approved at the ballot box in 2018. But enrollment could decline by between 16,000 and 30,000 people in 2028…
- In total, enrollment will decline between 3 million and 7 million people in 2028, the Urban Institute projects.
- Hospitals and healthcare providers are also concerned that the “sudden implementation” could result in many patients losing coverage and suffering disruptions in care, especially in rural areas, the Nebraska Hospital Association said in a release in mid-April.
- The providers are bracing for potential financial losses and increases in administrative burdens.
