Washington, D.C. — The past month has been nonstop economic chaos caused by Trump’s tariffs and congressional Republicans. In fact, one of House Republicans’ last legislative actions before ditching D.C. for two weeks was to vote to protect Trump’s tariffs, allowing them to continue as they work to pass their pro-billionaire tax breaks. Now, thanks to Trump’s and congressional Republicans’ tariffs:
- There is a 60% chance of a recession within the next year, up from 40% according to a Reuters poll of economists.
- The International Monetary Fund made a “sharp downgrade” to U.S. growth projections for 2025, citing tariffs as a contributing factor.
- The Dow is set to have its worst April since the Great Depression.
- Americans are more pessimistic about the economy than at any time during the Great Recession.
“As a college student who has a physical disability and a mother who works as a lunch lady, these Republican-backed tariffs are making it even harder for me and my family to make ends meet,” said college student Garrett Newell from Arizona’s 6th Congressional District. “We can’t afford to wait any longer. These tariffs are hurting our economy and our families, and Republicans in Congress need to use their power and support working-class families like mine – not millionaires and billionaires.”
“Instead of avoiding their constituents to focus on giving more tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy, Republicans in Congress should stop these unnecessary tariffs that are raising costs for their constituents– but instead, they voted to protect them,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “These tariffs are putting even more pressure on working families and raising costs on everyday goods. Congressional Republicans should listen to their constituents, stop these cost-raising tariffs, and start prioritizing working families.”
