In The Farm Bill Markup, Congressional Republicans Double Down On Agenda To Take Food From Families, Children, and Veterans

Washington, DC – Republicans in Congress are doubling down on their agenda that raises costs on working families and takes food assistance away from millions. During the House Agriculture Committee’s markup of the Republican Farm Bill this week, Republican committee members, including Congressman Rob Bresnahan (PA-08) and Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02), voted against reversing President Trump’s cuts to healthy, local food for children in schools, while doubling down on their historic SNAP cuts that have made it harder for families to put food on the table.

Congressional Republicans voted against restoring funding for the Local Food for Schools Program (LFS), which provided funding for schools to purchase healthy and locally sourced food for kids, hurting access to nutritious food for children and taking revenue from local farmers.

Republicans also continued their attacks on working families’ food assistance by voting against undoing the historic cuts to SNAP they made in last year’s Republican Tax Law — which cuts benefits for an estimated four million Americans in order to provide tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations.

Other amendments Republicans voted against included:

  • Protecting veterans from Republicans’ harsh SNAP eligibility requirements, taking away food access for those who have served
  • Providing much-needed support to farmers and families suffering under the Republican-backed tariffs
  • Providing funding to rural hospitals facing revenue losses as a result of the Medicaid and Medicare cuts in the Republican Tax Law

“Americans are struggling because the Republican agenda is raising costs and taking food assistance away from millions of working families, children, and veterans,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Instead of making life more affordable, Republicans in Congress have once again chosen to double down on their agenda of taking food off the tables of working Americans in order to fund more tax breaks for billionaires.”
