Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries sent a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson challenging the Speaker to a colloquy on the topic of the Republican budget resolution. The challenge comes as Johnson prepares for a floor vote this week to advance the GOP pro-billionaire agenda, which would cut crucial programs everyday Americans rely on, like Medicaid and SNAP, to pay for more massive tax breaks for billionaires.
Republicans haven’t been subtle about their attempts to weasel this bill through Congress; they’ve deployed shady accounting to obfuscate the costs of their proposed tax breaks for billionaires, they’re threatening to bypass the Senate Parliamentarian, and they’ve avoided facing their constituents, leading to weeks of widespread backlash, demonstrations, and citizen-led town halls across the country.
“Republicans are pushing more tax breaks for billionaires and are planning to cut programs for everyday people and raising costs with tariffs to pay for it. Meanwhile, the economy is crumbling, and they’re avoiding their constituents like the plague,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “Americans deserve to know the truth and are demanding answers from Republicans in Congress. Mike Johnson should accept the challenge: come clean about the pro-billionaire agenda he’s trying to force through Congress and explain why Republicans in Congress are fighting so hard for the ultra-wealthy and against everyday Americans.”
