“Moderate” House Republicans Just Voted to Raise Costs and Severely Cut Programs Everyday Working People Need

Washington D.C – After months of threatening a shutdown to leverage extreme cuts in the appropriations process, the Republican House majority failed to pass even a short-term continuing resolution today. The bill would have cut funding for most programs by 30% and raised the cost of housing, healthcare, and food, not to mention cutting access to Social Security, Head Start slots, loans for family farmers, support for small businesses, and taking food away from women, children, and seniors.

Unrig Our Economy campaign director Sarah Baron released the following statement:

“This is all a manufactured crisis to screw over working people. This continuing resolution wasn’t about reducing the deficit or preventing a government shutdown; it was about taking away what everyday working people and their families need. That’s what House Republicans’ economic policies have always been about. And it’s all in service of giving tax breaks to billionaires and corporations. They’re no longer trying to hide their true colors.”
