Now, the Fight Heads to the Senate Where Republicans Will Have to Decide Whether or Not to Lower Health Care Costs for Millions of Americans
Washington D.C — Today, following a Democratic-led effort to force a vote, the House voted to bring back health care tax credits that have helped tens of millions of Americans afford their health insurance. Republicans allowed these tax credits to expire last year, leaving millions of Americans hanging out to dry. However, after months of advocacy by progressive organizations and everyday constituents, 17 House Republicans were forced to relent.
Today’s vote does not undo their countless other attacks on health care. Republicans voted for the largest cuts to Medicaid in history, cuts to the VA, and they ended these health care tax credits in the first place. Now, the bill heads to the Senate, where its fate is still uncertain. Every day that Republicans refuse to revive these tax credits, more and more people will see massive premium spikes that could render their health care completely unaffordable. It’s time for Senate Republicans to wake up and vote to mitigate some of the harm they have caused.
“Ever since Republicans in Congress ended the health care tax credits late last year, I have been holding my breath, worried that I won’t be able to afford my family’s health insurance,” said Lisa Rancourt, a Maine resident and mother of two. “I’m relieved that this bill passed the House, but I still can’t believe that Republicans ended these tax credits in the first place. Senate Republicans need to listen to their constituents and pass this bill. Otherwise, my family’s premiums will continue to skyrocket even further.”
“At a time when millions of Americans are being crushed under the weight of higher health care prices and cost-raising tariffs, this vote to bring back the health care tax credits is a testament to thousands of constituents nationwide who never let their members of Congress off the hook,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Now, we are taking this fight to the Senate. Just like in the House, Senate Republicans have a choice – either stand with your constituents or vote to raise their health care costs exponentially. The answer should be clear.”
