The Ads Come As Americans See Sky High 2026 Health Insurance Premiums Thanks to Congressional Republicans’ Blocking Of Health Care Tax Credits
Washington D.C — Today, Unrig Our Economy released new ads calling out Congressmen Tom Kean Jr. (NJ-07) and Mike Lawler (NY-17) for their votes to trade away millions of Americans’ health care for tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy.
The New Jersey ad features Theresa, a mother of two disabled children, who relies on Medicaid to care for her family. In the ad, Theresa outlines the importance of Medicaid, and calls out Congressman Kean Jr. for putting Medicaid at risk to give billionaires more tax breaks.
The New York ad features mother and daughter Tina and Dee, Westchester residents who rely on Medicaid to provide 102-year-old Dee with the care she needs. They call out Congressman Lawler for breaking his promise not to cut Medicaid and voting for the largest cuts to Medicaid in history, hurting New Yorkers like Tina and Dee.
These ads come during Open Enrollment as millions of Americans who rely on ACA marketplace health care will see sky-high health insurance cost increases for 2026. Congressmen Kean Jr. and Lawler have done nothing to extend health care tax credits that help 466,000 New Jerseyans and 140,000 New Yorkers afford their coverage. We need Republicans in Congress like Tom Kean Jr. and Mike Lawler to stop voting to cut Americans’ health care, sign on to the ACA discharge petition, and vote to extend ACA tax credits.
“Congressmen Kean Jr. and Lawler voted to rip health coverage away from millions of Americans,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Managing Director Katie Gladstone. “From gutting Medicaid to failing to extend cost-saving ACA tax credits, these congressmen have consistently put the wants of the super-rich over the needs of working families. Constituents like Theresa, Tina, and Dee are speaking out because they deserve for their representatives to fight for them, not millionaires and billionaires.”

Ad transcript:
Tom Kean’s been silent about his cuts to Medicaid.
I’m a busy single mom,
but when you’re raising two disabled kids
and you’re down to your last meal so you can pay for medicine,
you start speaking out.
Child care for a disabled teenager is incredibly expensive.
Medicaid is the only reason my boys have medical care.
I don’t get why our congressman would take away health care from families like ours.
Congressman Tom Kean Jr., stop voting to cut Medicaid.

Ad transcript:
When I first heard that they were going to cut Medicaid,
my heart sunk because our mother is able to live her best, 102-year-old life because of it.
Congressman Mike Lawler said that he would protect Medicaid.
Instead, he voted to cut it to give tax breaks to billionaires.
We’ve tried several times to get Mike Lawler to answer us about this.
He just won’t answer.
Call Congressman Mike Lawler and tell him to stop cutting Medicaid.
