NEW ADS: Unrig Our Economy’s Ads Urge Senator Susan Collins to Save Mainers’ Health Care and End the Government Shutdown

Washington D.C — Today, Unrig Our Economy released a new radio ad and digital ad calling out Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) for allowing the government to remain shut down rather than help save Mainers’ health care. Senator Collins continues to vote against legislation that would both reopen the government and extend health care tax credits that help tens of thousands of Mainers afford health care. If Senator Collins doesn’t vote to extend these tax credits, health care costs would spike for over 50,000 Mainers and some would lose coverage entirely.

The ad features Lisa, a mother of two in Hermon, ME whose premiums could go up to $1,500 a month – nearly triple what she’s paying now – if Republicans like Senator Collins don’t extend the vital health care tax credits that her family relies on. Lisa calls on Senator Collins to do something and vote to save Mainers’ health care and reopen the government.

“While Senator Collins refuses to extend health care tax credits and reopen the government, people like Lisa and thousands of other Mainers are trying to figure out how they are going to afford their health care,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Mainers want their members of Congress to do whatever they can to lower health care costs, not shut down the government.”

Ad Transcript:

We work hard to give our boys a good life.

We deserve to be able to have health insurance, so that we don’t have to worry about getting ill or getting injured.

If something happens to me or my husband, we won’t be there for our kids.

Susan Collins voted against helping my family afford health insurance.

If she keeps standing in the way, our premiums could go up to $1,500 a month.

Senator Collins, save our health care and end the shutdown.

Ad Transcript:

Lisa: We’re a pretty typical Maine family. Our boys are 10 and 13. They love to play hockey and soccer.

VO: That’s Lisa of Hermon, ME, mother of two.

Lisa: We work hard to give them a good life, but things could get a lot harder soon.

Susan Collins voted against helping my family afford health insurance, and now, if she keeps standing in the way, our premiums could go up to $1,500 a month.

$1,500. That’s more than triple what we pay now.

Where does she think we’re going to get the money for that?

And it’s not just us.

50,000 Mainers could see their premiums increase, and Mainers in rural areas could be hit the hardest.

Susan Collins is supposed to be this big, influential Senator. Well, it’s time for her to actually do something.

Call Senator Collins at (202) 224-2523 and tell her to vote to save our health insurance and end the shutdown.
