New Analysis: 22 States are Currently Facing or Nearing a Recession As Republicans in Congress Double Down on Their Shutdown, Threatening Even Higher Costs for Millions

Washington D.C — A recent analysis from Moody’s Analytics Chief Economist Mark Zandi finds that 22 states are either in recession or at high risk of one – in large part because of the failed economic policies of Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress. So, how are Republican lawmakers addressing this affordability crisis? They’re working to raise Americans’ health insurance costs and refusing to end the government shutdown.

According to the report, the downturn is being driven in part by Trump’s tariffs, which Republicans in Congress have repeatedly greenlit. The states suffering most include those with heavy agricultural and manufacturing bases, where farmers and workers are already bearing the brunt of higher costs due to tariffs. Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress have deepened the crisis by shutting down the federal government and refusing to extend health care tax credits that help millions of families afford insurance.

“Republicans in Congress are holding the U.S. economy hostage, and working families are paying the price,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “At a time when costs are rising and tariffs are wreaking havoc on people’s pocketbooks, Republicans are doubling down on their agenda of raising health care costs on millions of Americans. It’s time for congressional Republicans to reopen the government, extend the health care tax credits, and start lowering costs for working families.”
