New Inflation Report Proves That Republicans Aren’t Just Failing to Lower Prices, They Are Continuing To Make Things Worse

Washington D.C — The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ December inflation report released today revealed that the cost of everyday essentials continues to soar. Most notably, food prices jumped by 0.7 percent from the previous month making it the largest one-month increase in over three years. These figures show that Republicans haven’t just failed to lower costs for working families – they are actively making the problem worse.

Republican-backed tariffs are one of the main culprits causing higher prices. From food to electronics to furniture to clothes, tariffs have pushed up the price of everyday goods, making life less affordable for the average American. Unrig Our Economy even has a site tracking food prices called Don’t Inflate Our Plates, which shows how the cost of key grocery items like beef and coffee have risen on Republicans’ watch. Despite these warning signs, Republicans in Congress have repeatedly voted to support the tariffs, burdening their own constituents with higher prices and fewer jobs.

Republicans in Congress are also kneecapping their constituents’ ability to make ends meet. They voted for historic cuts to vital programs like SNAP and Medicaid, which help millions of people put food on their table and access basic health care – all to pay for massive tax breaks for billionaires. They also ended health care tax credits that helped over 20 million people afford their health insurance. Many have also refused to condemn President Trump’s escalating attacks on the Federal Reserve, jeopardizing one of the main ways to combat inflation and risking further economic chaos.

“Because of Republican policies, working families are facing a dire ‘double whammy’ of higher prices and drastic cuts to programs that help them to support themselves and their families,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Today’s inflation report shows that Republicans haven’t just dropped the ball on their promise to lower costs – they have spent the past year dedicated to making life even more unaffordable for everyday Americans while handing out even more tax breaks to the wealthy. We need Republicans in Congress to stop voting to raise prices and actually stand up for their constituents.”
