Washington, D.C — Today’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) report confirms what working-class families across the country are already feeling: Trump’s reckless tariffs are driving up costs and making life more expensive for working families. Republicans in Congress have repeatedly endorsed these cost-raising tariffs, and their recently passed tax law will only make things worse by giving handouts to the ultra-wealthy while taking health care and food from millions of families who are already struggling with high costs.
This latest report shows that, thanks to the Republican tariffs, inflation had its sharpest increase since January. Working people are being hit the hardest. Prices on everyday goods such as clothes, food, and home furnishings have increased due to tariffs. Sadly, this may only be the beginning.
President Trump has threatened even higher tariffs on Canada, Mexico, the European Union, and many other countries. Piling on even more tariffs as families are already struggling to afford basic necessities would squeeze household budgets even further and hit working-class people the hardest.
Despite the fact that Congress holds the power to stop these tariffs, Republican leaders in both the House and Senate have supported and defended them – choosing to spend their time doling out tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires instead of helping the constituents that they are supposed to represent.
“Today’s inflation report confirms what we already knew: Trump’s tariffs are a tax on working-class Americans and additional tariffs would hurt them even more,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Republicans in Congress should intervene and put a stop to this, but so far they’ve just doubled down on policies that line the pockets of the ultra-rich while hurting hardworking families.”
