New Poll Shows Overwhelming Public Support for Extending Health Care Tax Credits. Republicans in Congress Refuse to Listen & Are Risking a Shutdown Instead.

Washington D.C — New polling from Impact Research shows that there is widespread support for extending vital health care tax credits, which Republicans in Congress allowed to expire in their tax law so that they could pay for massive tax breaks for billionaires. According to these latest data in the ten states and congressional districts polled:

  • 72% support Congress extending the health care tax credits, and 44% rate it as very important.
  • Majorities of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans support extending the health care tax credits.
  • 52% say that lowering the cost of monthly health insurance premiums would provide the biggest relief to their monthly expenses.

Congressional Republicans’ refusal to listen to their constituents is going to raise costs on working families and could even cause a government shutdown. Unless they vote to extend these critical tax credits as soon as possible, 2 million Americans will lose their health insurance next year and monthly premiums will skyrocket for millions more.

“This latest polling clearly shows that Americans are demanding lower costs and affordable health care, yet Republicans in Congress continue to ignore them in favor of millionaires and billionaires,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Congressional Republicans would rather risk a government shutdown than reverse course and preserve health care tax credits millions rely on. We need our leaders to focus on lowering health care costs, not enriching the ultra-wealthy.”
