Washington D.C — Congressional Republicans’ plan to slash critical programs to fund more tax breaks for the wealthy has been a strong indicator that they care less about working people than their wealthy and big corporate donors. Now, the Senate’s Joint Economic Committee is releasing the math to prove it.
Their new report shows:
- The top 0.1% would receive an extra $350,000 each year from the Republican Tax Scam – even when accounting for the effects of the Republican tariffs.
- Meanwhile, grade school teachers, truck drivers, firefighters, and social workers would lose an average of nearly $500 each year.
And they might be the lucky ones. House cleaners, retail sales workers, and home health aides would each lose more than $650 per year thanks to Congressional Republicans’ signature policies.
The data from the Joint Economic Committee is based on nonpartisan analyses, including the Congressional Budget Office report about how the House version of the bill would impact working people in different industries.
“I didn’t go into social work for the money — I did it to help members of my community,” said Billy Claywell, an Iowa-based social worker. “This tax scam is extremely offensive to the social workers, firefighters, teachers, and more that serve their communities. By giving tax breaks to billionaires, Republicans in Congress are betraying the working- and middle-class families they are supposed to serve.”
“Congressional Republicans are literally robbing teachers to pay tycoons,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Working people are going to take home less money so that billionaires can get tax breaks. The Republican Tax Scam and tariffs are taking money out of the pockets of working families and putting it into the bank accounts of the wealthy and well-connected.”
