Washington D.C — Due to the ongoing Republican-led government shutdown, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) won’t be releasing its monthly jobs report tomorrow. With Republicans leaving Americans in the dark about the state of the economy, Unrig Our Economy is stepping in to fill the gap with our own “People’s Jobs Report.” Since Trump and congressional Republicans took control of Washington, their policies – from tariffs to health care cuts – have devastated workers and families, and the shutdown only makes things worse.
Here are some of the most alarming economic developments under this Republican-led government, which are included in the report:
- ADP reported that U.S. companies shed 32,000 jobs last month.
- In June, the economy lost 13,000 jobs – the first time the economy lost jobs since 2020.
- The unemployment rate climbed to 4.3%, the highest since 2021.
- Unemployment for recent college graduates is 5.3%, one of the weakest in a decade.
- Unemployment for Black workers has gone up to 7.5%, the highest level since October 2021.
- Major companies, including Procter & Gamble, Microsoft, Walmart, and Amazon were forced into massive layoffs since Republicans took power.
The government shutdown and the impending expiration of vital health care tax credits threatens to make this trend even worse. Republicans shut down the government by refusing to extend these tax credits, which have helped millions afford health coverage. If they expire, it could cost the U.S. nearly 300,000 jobs in the next year. The shutdown itself is also going to hurt workers nationwide. Millions of workers will not receive a paycheck on time during the duration of the shutdown, and the Trump administration is threatening mass layoffs, hurting countless families.
