Washington, DC –– Congressional Republicans were already catching heat for their votes to gut Medicaid and wreak havoc on rural hospitals. That was before Politico’s new report that hospital executives are warning of a ‘bloodbath’ for rural hospitals caused by congressional Republicans’ tax law.
Even Republicans, including a former adviser to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, are sounding the alarm.
From Politico:
By one estimate, the law’s tax cuts could force more than 300 rural hospitals to close. In Erwin, Tennessee, it may mean Unicoi Hospital never reopens, leaving the county without any hospitals or emergency rooms.
“This is going to be a bloodbath if something isn’t changed,” said [Alan] Levine, a Republican who once led Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ health care transition team. “The issue isn’t just about Unicoi and whether it reopens, it will be about how many hospitals we can even keep open.”
The Republican Tax Law is already deeply unpopular. Fox News found that 59 percent of Americans oppose the law and half of Americans believe the law will hurt their families.
A Republican Congressman was even caught potentially benefiting from the law’s attacks on hospitals. The New York Times reported earlier this month that Congressman Rob Bresnahan (PA-08) sold bonds in Pennsylvania hospitals following a report that rural Pennsylvania hospitals were at risk of closure, a situation made more dire by the law’s Medicaid cuts that he voted for.
“Congressional Republicans didn’t just vote to gut Medicaid and take health insurance away from millions of Americans, they also voted to destroy the hospitals many of their rural constituents rely on,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Republicans were repeatedly warned that this bill would devastate rural hospitals. We’re going to hold them accountable for putting the interests of the wealthy over the health care access of working Americans.”
