Washington D.C — Today, 50 Republican senators and Vice President JD Vance decided that the lives of the millions of Americans they’re ripping health coverage and SNAP benefits from are ‘immaterial’ so they can give even more tax breaks to the wealthy.
Senate Republicans somehow managed to make deeper cuts to Medicaid than the House-passed bill that would lead to an additional 51,000 deaths per year. The bill risks hospital closures, includes $1 trillion in health care cuts, and guts the SNAP program that working families rely on to put food on the table.
The bill is so harmful that one Senator announced his retirement after deciding to vote against it, and another negotiated special carve-outs to shield her state from some of the bill’s most devastating impacts.
“Senate Republicans just attacked working families across America. But I guess that’s ‘immaterial,’ because at least they advanced even more tax breaks for the super wealthy,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “The American people are already speaking out against this bill and will continue holding senators accountable for deciding that their lives are immaterial.”
