Republicans Are Panicking Over Backlash to Their Own Health Care Cuts

Sen. Tillis, Rep. Bacon, and Other Lawmakers Are Feeling Pressure on Cuts to Medicaid Following Unrig Our Economy Ads Holding Them Accountable

Washington, D.C. — Recent reporting from Punchbowl News, CNN, and NOTUS shows Republican lawmakers are starting to feel the heat over their plan to rip health care away from millions of Americans.

On Monday, Punchbowl reported that Senator Thom Tillis is handing out flyers to his colleagues detailing how much their plan would hurt their own constituents.

Tillis’ panicked behavior comes less than a week after Congressman Don Bacon angrily tweeted at Unrig Our Economy over ads highlighting his vote for historic Medicaid cuts and two weeks after the NRCC sent a threatening (and unsuccessful) letter demanding local TV stations stop airing Unrig ads on the issue.

On Tuesday, NOTUS reported that 16 House Republicans, who already voted to slash Medicaid and leave 16 million Americans without health insurance, are getting worried about the Senate’s upcoming vote to move the bill closer to President Trump’s desk.

“Congressional Republicans are panicking because they’re being held accountable for advancing an unpopular bill that would rip health care away from their own constituents,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Senate Republicans have an opportunity to reject these historic health care cuts. But House Republicans can’t run away from their vote to leave 16 million Americans without health coverage. They should listen to their constituents’ anger and stop voting for Medicaid cuts to fund tax breaks for billionaires.”
