Republicans Choose to Let Families Go Hungry, Fight Federal Judge’s New Order to Fully Fund SNAP

Washington, D.C — Today, after a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to fully fund SNAP benefits by tomorrow and feed hungry families, the Justice Department said it would file an appeal in yet another attempt to prevent families from being able to put food on the table for their loved ones. Previously, the Trump administration refused to fund November SNAP benefits at all until they were forced to agree to fund partial benefits. Over 40 million people rely on SNAP to feed themselves and their families, but Republicans have been fighting tooth and nail to keep families hungry.

Earlier this year, congressional Republicans voted for massive cuts to SNAP and backed tariffs, which have increased the cost of groceries. Now, Republicans are choosing to keep the government shut down instead of doing their jobs, lowering health care costs, and funding vital programs like SNAP.

“Families have already suffered enough, going nearly a week without SNAP. They don’t deserve all of this whiplash from Republicans over the food they need to survive,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Republicans have caused the longest-ever government shutdown by refusing to permanently extend cost-saving health care tax credits that millions of Americans rely on to afford health coverage. Now, they are fighting tooth and nail to avoid fully funding SNAP and feeding hungry families and children. Who does that? We need Republicans in Congress to restore full SNAP benefits now, save Americans’ health care, and end the government shutdown.”
